Active Shooter Drill Held At Carmel's Chuang Yen Monastery
Although it looked like a real response, an influx of emergency agencies and police at a Hudson Valley monastery was only a drill to prepare for an active shooter scenario. The exercise was held in Putnam County on Sunday, April 21 at the Chuang Yen Monastery in Carmel at 2020 Route 301, according to the Carmel Fire Department. Brush Fire Breaks Out Near Route 22 In Brewster
A large brush fire near a busy Hudson Valley road sent plumes of smoke into the air before crews could put it out. The blaze happened in Putnam County on Tuesday afternoon, April 9 off Route 22 in Brewster, where a large brush fire ignited, Carmel fire officials said on Wednesday, April 17. The incident prompted a large response from the Brewster and Carmel Fire Departments and sent plenty of smoke into the air before it was eventually put out. No injuries were reported.

Thomas G. DeMarchi, the former Commissioner of the Carmel Fire Department, has died at the age of 67. DeMarchi, who lived his final days at Rosary Hill Home in Hawthorne, died the evening of Sunday, Oct. 13. Born in Brooklyn on July 5, 2952, he moved to Mahopac in 1969, where he went on to graduate from Mahopac High School. He attended college at Lowell Technical Institute in Massachusetts and studied cooking until his departure in 1973 to pursue a career as a police officer in Carmel. Lake Carmel is closed to swimmers and boaters as emergency responders search for a missing man. The Lake Carmel Fire Department said it was dispatched on a report of a missing swimmer at around 7:35 p.m. Saturday, July 20. The man has been identified as a Connecticut resident in his 50s. The department was assisted in the search by the Carmel Fire Department, Mahopac Falls Volunteer Fire Department dive team and Putnam County Sheriff's Department, Kent Police. After four hours of hard work, the Patterson Fire Department managed to save a horse that was stuck in the mud on the banks of the Wonder Lake State Park.
