This week, Police Officers Vincent Pinto and Emily Yankowski teamed with local school children to help AAA New York Launch its 70th annual “Schools Open – Drive Carefully” campaign at the Tuckahoe Police Department.
As part of the program, officers and volunteers with the department will be busy mounting colorful signs to remind drivers that school is officially open and they should proceed carefully while driving on narrow, local roads around the schools.
Assistant Director of AAA Northeast Donna Galasso stated that by teaming with local police departments, her organization is able to more effectively spread the world to local residents.
“The help that we get from our club-area police departments adds to the effectiveness of our ‘School’s Open’ campaign,” she said. “We appreciate the efforts of Officer Pinto (and) Yankowski, which will result in increased safety for all students.”
Throughout the state, AAA will distribute nearly 4,000 posters to remind drivers there are children and school buses flooding the streets every September. The posters will be displayed at major intersections, business districts and school crossings. Upwards of 14,000 bumper stickers with the same message also will be circulated.
Drivers and bicyclists must be especially cautious in school areas, keeping their speed at or below posted limits, Galasso noted. Be prepared to stop, on both sides of the street, for school buses with flashing red lights and stop signs as is required by New York State law.
