Looking Back At Fire That Forever Changed Landscape In Carmel The Putnam County Sheriff’s Department is using "Throwback Thursday" to look back on the fire that forever altered the landscape of Carmel as we know it today. The blaze occurred in the area of Gleneida Avenue on October 22, 1974, causing damage and destruction to many local businesses: Morettini’s Variety Store was the largest, followed by Capiello’s Jewelers, Carmel Liquor Store, Kurtz Newspaper Store, Smalley’s Inn, Amber Waves of Grain and Montgomery Ward and Simpson’s Drug Store.
