‘A True Gentleman’: Retired Nysp Trooper Dies At Age 61 From 9/11-Related Illness Decades after he helped search for survivors buried in the rubble of the World Trade Center following the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, a retired New York State Police trooper has died. Patrick Hogan, of North Greenbush in Rensselaer County, died Thursday, April 13, at the age of 61 from an illness stemming from his time at what became known as Ground Zero, according to State Police. State Police Investigator From Hudson Valley Dies Of 9/11-Related Illness A State Police investigator from the Hudson Valley has died from a 9/11 related illness. Investigator Ryan D. Fortini, 42, died on Wednesday, Jan. 1, from cancer stemming from his assignment to the World Trade Center site, announced State Police Superintendent Keith M. Corlet.  Following the events of 9/11, Fortini was assigned to aid with the search and recovery efforts in New York City, as part of the state police detail, Corlet said.
