MAHOPAC, N.Y. Following a loss to Yorktowns Kyle Santucci last week, Hen Huds Kevin McDermott went to the videotape.
Kevin was determined to bounce back and beat Santucci this week, Hen Hud assistant coach Shane Turrone said. Kevin watched the tape, of their match, over and over again and worked on correcting his mistakes.
McDermott did his homework and it resulted in him beating Santucci in the 132-pound final in a Section 1 Large School Wrestling Championship Qualifier at Mahopac.
The top four finishers in each weight class advanced to the Section 1 Large School Championship/New York State Qualifier that will be held Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 11-12. The first day of wrestling will be held at Clarkstown South High School, beginning 9 a.m. Wrestling will resume with the semifinals Sunday at 9 a.m. at the Goldstein Center on the campus of Pace University in Pleasantville. The finals are scheduled for 4 p.m.
Phil Siegel (160 pounds) and Sean Barry (285) won their respective weight classes. Hen Hud qualified eight for sectionals.
Kevin has been one of the hardest workers on our team since day one, Turrone said. Kevin is dedicated and always wants to improve.
Siegel posted an 8-3 decision over Mahopacs Aaron Gallagher. Barry pinned Yorktowns David Varian at 3:32. It is Barrys second win over Varian in seven days. Last week, Barry beat Varian for the Super 16 title.
Phil had a nice day, Turrone said. It was nice to see him wrestle after he missed Super 16 because of an injury.
Sean is really coming into form and now holds the program record as a three-time divisional champ.
Lance Perlmutter, who was seeded fifth at 152, beat third-seeded Vince Pecora of Carmel in the first round and finished third.
