Recycling E-Waste Raises Money for CET PTA

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – Carrie E. Tompkins Elementary School will host an electronics take-back day on Jan. 24 for old cell phones, laptops and other electronics that shouldn’t be thrown in the garbage.

“We were able to find a domestic scrapper, they will take it all apart domestically, they don’t go to prisons. They keep all of these toxins out of landfills, and luckily enough, will benefit the PTA because they will buy these things from the PTA,” said Leila Goldmark, a member of Carrie E. Tompkins’ newly formed Green Team.

A little-known New York State law, the Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act, requires manufacturers to provide convenient recycling to New York consumers, some non-profits and small businesses. Many large distributors, such as Staples, provide electronic take-back, and are required to distribute information about how to recycle Consumer Electronic Equipment (CEE) at the point of sale.

Computer mice, keyboards, monitors, laptops, cell phones, printers, VCRs, DVD players, digital records and cable and satellite receivers are all covered under the law. Many of the electronic devices mentioned contain toxic chemicals, which can be hazardous if disposed of in landfills.

Goldmark said that many people “hang on to old laptops and things because they don’t know what to do with them.” The recycling take-back will provide a convenient way to dispose of old electronics, and can help raise money for the PTA. Volunteers will collect electronics in the main hallway of CET, from 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24 and Wednesday, Jan. 25.
