YORKTOWN, N.Y. - Brian Hugick is a high school science teacher, but he also is a planner and that's the approach he has brought to the Lakeland Board of Education during his six years as a trustee.
"I believe in a five-year business plan," said Hugick, who is running for a third, three-year term in the May 15 election. "These are challenging times for the school district. There seems to be challenging times all the time."
Hugick, 49, a 24-year district resident, mentioned unfunded state mandates as one of the major challenges with which Lakeland has to deal.
"They're requiring more for less and we have to find a way to pay for it," he said. "We have to think outside the box and be more efficient. I think we've come a long way. We offer quality education at an affordable price."
Hugick said he was proud of the district's bus maintenance facility that has allowed a fleet of 150 buses to be safer and last longer. He also mentioned Smart Boards in classrooms that have enhanced learning for students.
As part of a trio of incumbents seeking reelection this year for three available seats, Hugick said the board functions like a well-oiled machine.
"We're team players," he said. "It's nice to have a board that works well together."
