A 45-year-old woman was arrested for nine counts of animal abuse after the police had been to the home on a child neglect issue and found the mistreated and abused animals.

The unidentified woman was arrested on Tuesday, May 28, when Putnam County SPCA officers responded to the Kent home following the report of possible animal neglect, said the SPCA.

The issue came to light when the Kent Police were assisting the Putnam County Child Protective Services at the home in regard to the welfare of a child and unsanitary living conditions.

Upon arrival, officers found deplorable living conditions and extreme animal neglect, the SPCA said.

Officers seized nine animals that were seen to be living in urine soaked, cluttered, feces-filled environments. All of the animals showed some level of emaciation, but others were extremely emaciated.

All of the animals seized were taken to Guardian Veterinary Specialists where they were examined including dogs, ferrets, a rabbit, and cats.

All the animals were covered with filth, feces and smelled of urine. All showed signs of severe neglect and malnutrition, as well as other wounds and illnesses including a heart murmur.

Due to the involvement of Child Protective Services, the Putnam County SPCA will not be releasing the name of the person arrested.

At present, the animals are not available for adoption.
