Village Elections Held on Tuesday in Buchanan

BUCHANAN, N.Y. – The Village of Buchanan will hold village elections on Tuesday beginning at 6 a.m. Polls close at 9 p.m. The village in northern Westchester has about 2,200 residents, two voting districts and only one voting location, the village hall, located at 236 Tate Ave., Buchanan.

Buchanan’s two election districts have a total of 1,306 registered voters, and according to Village Administrator Kevin Hay, the village has a very high voter turnout.

Candidates on the ballot will be incumbent Democrats Mayor Sean Murray, Trustee Richard Funchion and Trustee Nick Zachary. Opponents are all Republicans, and include former Mayor Al Donahue, candidate for trustee Angelo Iacomini and Ed Del Monte. Republican candidates will also be running under the “Village Choice” party line.

While Republican candidates promise a “there’s going to be a zero tax increase,” said Donahue, Democratic incumbents say age infrastructure and rising costs make a "zero" increase unrealistic.

“The Village of Buchanan is not an island, they have the same problems as bigger municipalities,” Murray said.

Murray added that sharing projects between municipalities, for example the bulk purchase of paving materials with the Town of Cortlandt, is where the village will actually be able to save money.
