Tractor Trailer Filled With Gravel Overturns on Bear Mountain State Parkway

CORTLANDT MANOR, N.Y. – A tractor trailer carrying gravel overturned eastbound on Route 6, closing the busy corridor near the Bear Mountain Bridge Friday morning, New York State Police said. The roadway reopened at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

The driver of the truck, owned by Mat Enterprises in Haverstraw, was taken to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla for treatment of his injuries, but the driver, identified by state police as Robert Thomas, 46, was conscious when police and emergency personnel arrived at the scene. The accident, which took place around 10:25 a.m., is near Route 9 and Route 9D, close to the bridge and the part of Route 6 known to locals as the goat trail.

The truck blocked both east and left lanes and troopers at the scene said the road will be closed both ways for the time being. The vehicle was on its way to the Sprout Brook Ash Disposal Facility in Cortlandt Manor at the time of the accident, according to Don Smith, general manager of Mat Enterprises.

Trooper Vincent Cutillo said it was too early in the investigation to know for certain what traffic violations might be forthcoming, but did believe excessive speed was likely a contributing factor to the accident.

Police were interviewing an eyewitness to the accident, a volunteer firefighter at the Continental Village Fire Department in Cortlandt. He declined to speak to reporters, but a  chief for that department, Ray Stretz, said there have been other accidents on that stretch of road.

"We've had quite a few tractor trailer rollovers between here and Annsville Circle," he said. "Good thing nobody was coming the other way."
