Pink Ribbon Yoga for Breast Cancer in Croton

CROTON, NY - A Pink Ribbon Yoga class for breast cancer patients and survivors will be held Sunday at 5 p.m. at Hudson Yoga in Croton. There will be a rotating weekly schedule of yoga and meditation teachers, which will “offer guidance for women to become full participants in their own healing at all stages of treatment.”

“It’s not a stranger next to you,” said Leslie Fabian, a Croton resident and breast cancer survivor, “even though you might never have met them.” Fabian, a local psychotherapist, was surprised when her oncologist told her to complement her treatment by eating a low-fat diet, exercising as much as possible and meditating. Fabian recalls that “I said, ‘I don’t think I can quiet my brain,’ and he said ‘I know, that’s why you need to meditate.’”

Teachers that will rotate through the classes include Solange LaBonne, Registered Yoga Teacher and Certified Holistic Health Provider, Cara Sax Registered Yoga Teacher, and Amy Newman, Licensed Master Social Work, who will offer meditation.

Kate Graham, Iyengar yoga instructor and owner of Hudson Yoga is donating the space for the classes, saying that, “Most of us know someone that has been affected by breast cancer. Hudson Yoga’s safe and relaxing environment helps individuals focus on relaxation, strength and balance.” Elisha Simpson Fernandes, founder of Laughing Hearts Yoga, says that “this is a chance for women to come together in a safe environment and be comforted.”

In a 2006 study done by the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, yoga was shown to breast cancer patient’s quality of life. “Whether it’s yoga,” said Kavita Chandwani, M.D., yoga instructor and co-investigator for the study, “or some other type of mind-body program, we believe this study shows how beneficial it is to participate throughout treatment to help with quality of life-based issues.”
