Hudson Valley Hospital Is Ready For Hurricane Sandy

CORTLANDT, N.Y. ? Hudson Valley Hospital Center set up a staff sleeping area in the Wagner Conference Room and stocked up on pharmaceuticals, food, water and fuel over the weekend to get ready for Hurricane Sandy.

"We have to think about a 72-hour window for planning, where you might not get deliveries," said Bill Dauster, vice president of marketing for the hospital.

Linda Piccirilli, director of quality management, planned to spend Monday night in the hospital's conference room. The Ulster County resident said she should could get home Monday night but is uncertain if should would be able to get back to work Tuesday.

"I watched the weather all weekend," said Piccirilli. "I packed an aero mattress, I packed a bag and a blanket and I plan to stay along with a number of my staff." Piccirilli said about four members of her staff will weather the storm in the conference room, and that every department has a couple staff members staying overnight.

"Throughout the hospital, every department has people staying. The radiology department has people staying, certainly the nursing staff has people staying, it's just kind of what we do here," Piccirilli said.

The hospital canceled its farmers market, scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 30, and normally held in the parking lot.

Otherwise, said Dauster, patients should call for updates on outpatient services and surgeries. "Right now, all systems are go," he said.
