Hand Grenade Removed From Cortlandt Park

CORTLANDT, N.Y. - State Police reported finding a hand grenade in Sunset Park off of Montrose Point Road in Cortlandt, about 4 p.m. Tuesday. A State Police Bomb Disposal Unit safely removed the grenade and cleared the area using a dog trained in explosives detection.

Police say the device was discovered by two residents walking on a wooded path behind the park's ball field. State Police Investigator Robert Mollica said it's difficult to tell if the hand grenade is live until the pin is pulled to activate the device.

Police are investigating how long the device would have been in the woods and who left it there, but Mollica said it would "probably be a tough one."

The grenade showed signs of rust and wear and appeared to be many years old, according to a State Police report.

Mollica said the grenade appeared to be a World War II era relic, and that he was informed by Bomb Disposal Unit personnel that it is not uncommon for World War II era memorabilia to be "carelessly discarded."
