Eighth Grade Departs Van Cortlandt Middle School

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—Pierre Van Cortlandt Middle School students celebrated moving into high school with a graduation ceremony that took place on the high school field on Friday morning. Despite frequent warnings of rain the weather held out, and students were able to walk across the same stage many of their siblings had walked across the night before.

“You just remember when they’re so little,” said Dave Tuttle, who watched his daughter graduate eighth grade today, and whose son, Jake Tuttle, graduated from Croton-Harmon High School the night before. “Now when they’re coming through eighth grade they’re so individual,” said Tuttle.

All four of the school’s musical ensembles played, which included the jazz band’s rendition of “Crazy Train,” by Ozzy Osbourne, and a chorus rendition of “Blackbird,” composed by Beatle members John Lennon and Paul McCartney.  “They’re not shy at all,” said chorus teacher Michael Katzman, and according to band teacher Lisa Sable, “they’e a very musical and very sweet.”

According to Caity De Michele, a graduating eighth grade student, high school’s most appealing perk is “the freedom.” “Being able to pick your classes,” said Julia Vindigni, along with other clubs and afterschool activities will be new to the students. “It’s going to be kind of scary at first, but it’ll be fine,” said De Michele.

The crowd of hundreds all stood and waved to the graduates when Dr. Fuhrman, Superintendent of Croton-Harmon Schools, told them to stand and give their parents a wave of gratitude for all their hard work. “It shows you,” said Dr. Fuhrman later, “how quickly life goes, and how important it is to get as much as you can out of every moment, because blink and those guys are going to be at their high school graduation.”

A reception for the graduates and their families and friends was held in the rotunda of the high school. Each eighth grade graduate received a diploma to mark their accomplishment.
