Clearwater Festival Creates Traffic Fiasco

CROTON, N.Y. – Warnings from police about Clearwater Festival traffic Saturday turned out to be an accurate prediction as nearly a mile of cars idled while waiting to park.

“Clearwater was a magnificent success,” said Leo Wiegman, Mayor of Croton-on-Hudson, “once you were in the festival.”

Steve Lurie, director of the Clearwater Hudson River Revival, said there was an increased number of attendees at this year's festival, which was held at Croton Point Park.

Even Jackson Browne, the festival’s most talked about performer, commented on the horrendous traffic situation getting into the festival, as he made his cameo appearance introducing “friend” Carlos Varelo.

Greg Schmidt, a Croton Trustee, suggested the traffic waiting to park at the Croton Train Station Parking lot was backed up nearly to Route 133 in Briarcliff.

“This is an environmental activist group,” said Schmidt, “and to have so many cars idling is not good for the environment.”

Members of The Daily Croton's Facebook community described Saturday morning traffic as "terrible."

"It took me 22 minutes to go from the light by Shoprite the 100 yards to turn left onto Rt. 9 South,” commented Pam Hilton Harris. “Literally 22 minutes."

Suggested remedies for the traffic situation for next year’s Clearwater Festival included signs near the Croton Point Avenue exit on Route 9, which notifies non-residents that they can park at the Croton-Harmon Train Station and be shuttled to the festival site, to having the Croton Police Department direct traffic. No final resolutions have been passed on the matter.

Abraham Zambrano, Village Manager, pointed out that last year's Toughman Triathlon, which also takes place in Croton Point Park, also had traffic complications. As a result the Croton Police Department will be directing traffic at that event this year.
