CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. Despite the growth of e-filing, crowds of taxpayers are still flocking to the Croton-on-Hudson Post Office. They are waiting in line, envelopes in hand, to mail in their tax forms and filings before the Tuesday deadline for federal taxes.
A lot more people are e-filing now, said Ray Demchak, postmaster at the Croton-on-Hudson Post Office. The 25-year post office worker said, nevertheless, the pattern of last-minute tax filers at the post office has remained the same for many years. The people who are getting their money back come in at the end of January, people who are paying come in the week before" the deadline, he said.
Elise Landesberg, reference librarian of the Hendrick Hudson Free Library, said many people request paper forms from librarians. Well download the forms from the Internet for them, and most people are happy with that, she said.
Jan Regis was at the Croton Post Office for one reason: the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation Mobility Tax, better known as the MTA Payroll Tax. The freelance writer says she was informed by her accountant that the forms still have to be mailed.
Next year, however, she and many other freelance or self-employed individuals will not have to take the trip to the post office. The tax will not be applied to self-employed individuals earning less than $50,000 along with many small businesses owners because of legislative changes.
