Bear Sighted Near Hollow Brook Golf in Cortlandt

A five-foot tall black bear was sighted in Cortlandt Saturday morning near the woods along Hollow Brook Golf Course, according to New York State Police. A Cortlandt resident called State Police after seeing the bear dig through his neighbor’s garbage.

The bear was seen at 5:50 a.m. along Durrin Avenue. The residential street borders the woods along Hollow Brook Golf Course. The resident who reported seeing the bear said the animal stood on his hind legs, and appeared to be about five feet tall. The bear did not appear to be rabid.

After a few minutes the bear was reported to have walked back into the woods.

Twenty-year Durrin Avenue resident Doug Margrey said he had “never seen one here,” when asked about recent or past black bear sitings.

State Police were not able to find the bear when they arrived on the scene. The case was referred to the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
