A Warm Place to Charge Your Phone in Cortlandt

CORTLANDT MANOR, N.Y. – About 17.5 percent of the residents in the Town of Cortlandt continue to struggle with power outages as of 4 p.m. Tuesday, three days after a freak snowstorm dumped six inches of wet, heavy snow on the area.

Cortlandt is keeping its shelter open, in the Muriel H. Morabito Community Center, located at 29 Westbrook Drive, until 9 a.m., Wednesday. Con Edison is estimating power will be returned to all Cortlandt residents by the end of Wednesday. Crated pets will be allowed in the community center.

The community center has power strips to recharge phones and laptops, and people spending the night should bring pillows and covers. The Town of Cortlandt has no shower facilities open.

Other commercial locations have free Wi-Fi after purchasing a cup of coffee or other small item. Panera Bread and Barnes and Noble, in the Cortlandt Town Center, have free Wi-Fi, as does the Black Cow in Croton.

Nine roads remain closed in the town, down from 20 yesterday. About 2,286 people in Cortlandt still do not have power, as of 4 p.m. Tuesday, of the 12,295 that Con Edison serves. Dry ice will be distributed by Con Edison in the BJ’s parking lot in Yorktown Heights.

Cortlandt Supervisor Linda Puglisi said the dry ice distribution is moot, since most perishables should have been discarded by this time. Power has been restored to Town Hall, taking it off of the back-up generator.

Many trees left in roadways are still tangled with Con Edison wires. Town crews must wait for Con Edison to clear wires before trees can be cleared.
