Santa Responds to Croton Residents' Letters

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – If you’ve ever written a letter to Santa Claus, and held your breath each time you opened the mailbox waiting for a response, wait no longer. The Village of Croton Recreation Department will guarantee a response to your letter between Dec. 1 and Dec. 9.

“We’ve been through so many letters here. One year a kid asked for an actual car, I think he was like six years old, and he was a little upset that his parents wouldn’t give it to him. So, I said, ‘In due time, hopefully your parents will give it to you when you’re of legal driving age,’” said Mark Duncan, recreation supervisor.

Duncan said the Recreation Department can receive between 70 and 150 letters per year, asking for everything from cars to less stunning choices of toys. The program has been going on for at least 12 years, meaning Duncan and one other recreation department employee have answered anywhere between 840 and 1,800 letters to Santa Claus.

“It’s a fun program, we get some really neat stuff from some kids. We’ve gotten letters where the parent will write the name and address of the kid and we just get squiggly lines. We have to get creative with what we receive, it’s a lot of fun,” said Duncan.

Every one, said Duncan, gets a response signed by Santa Claus. Residents can mail their letters to Santa at a special post box in the Stanley H. Kellerhouse Municipal Building, on Van Wyck Street, or they can drop their letter in a post box at the Save Mor in the Croton Commons shopping center.
