CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - J. Daniel Cassidy, of Croton-on-Hudson, died Jan. 14 after a 12-year battle with cancer. He was 76.
Retired from the New York State Corrections Department, Cassidy was most recently employed as a bus operator.
He was born to Christopher John and Helen Cumming on July 26, 1935 in Ossining. Cassidy worked at the corrections department for 26 years before retiring in 1985.
Cassidy served his community as a volunteer for the Croton Caring Committee and at the Montrose V.A. Hospital, where he would assist disabled veterans attending mass on Sunday. A member of the Holy Name of Mary Parish in Croton, he was a Eucharist minister. Cassidy was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Post 4730.
He also appreciated the scenic value of Croton-on-Hudson, enjoying time on the Hudson and Croton rivers with his family. For many decades, Cassidy would spent time in the marshes and on the shores fishing and duck-hunting. He loved baseball and was a longtime fan of the St. Louis Cardinals.
Surviving are his wife Ida, his sister Elizabeth T. Cassidy of Croton-on-Hudson, his daughter Sharon of Hawaii, his sons Daniel (Elizabeth) of New Fairfield, Conn. Kevin of Montana and James of New Paltz, N.Y. and six grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sisters Virginia and Mary and his brother Christopher "Jack" Cassidy.
Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at Dorsey Funeral Home in Ossining. The funeral mass will start at 10 a.m. on Thursday at Holy Name of Mary Church in Croton, followed by interment at St. Augustine Cemetery.
