CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Black Cow Coffee Company reopens 6 a.m. Saturday, after moving from its 17-year location on Croton's Maple Street to a space twice as large, at 4 Old Post Road S., in Croton's upper village.
Over the course of 12 days, owner Michael Grant, family members and employees moved 17 years worth of equipment, furniture and memories from the Maple Street location to a freshly renovated space in the upper village. Grant said he is "thrilled," to be in the former Wondrous Things space.
"I did not expect it to take so long, there's just a million little things," he said, "But it's done, and it was amazing when the Health Department signed off."
"I felt it, relieved," Grant said, "12 days down in a small business is really brutal." He added, "It's kind of like a hand to mouth operation."
After reopening at 6 a.m. Saturday, the shop resumes its normal schedules, closing at 7 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, The Black Cow opens at 5 a.m. and closes at 7 p.m., and is open Sunday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
As village residents anticipate the opening, "The Black Cow Coffee Co" Facebook page became a source for updates. Hundreds "liked" status updates of the new location, commented on photos of the now-empty Maple Street location, and well-wishes accumulated.
"I passed by and looked in and it looks great. I can just about smell the coffee, Hang in there buddy we'll see you soon," wrote Mario Giacalone, in response to one update about the new location.
Tsui Yuen-Pappas wrote that the entire village has been going through withdrawal during the temporary time without the coffee shop.
The phone number will remain the same (914-271-7544), free Wi-Fi is still available, Grant still roasts the coffee, "Michael's advice" is still free although only available in "jumbo."
When asked what customers will notice about the new space, Grant said just that, "Space! Space!"
"I'm going to get a chair with wheels," he said, "I can fly all the way across the store."
The location, at 4 Old Post Road S., is more than double the previous location, from about 1,000 square feet on Maple Street, to about 2,300 at 4 Old Post Road S. Just a few steps up from the main café, is a smaller room in which Grant plans to sell retail items. Grant hopes to fill the larger space with more art and live music events.
On Maple Street, Grant said he will most miss the stairs and wall just outside the front door. He is hoping to have outdoor seating at the new location.
