A sheriff's department canine mauled an innocent puppy, leading to its death in Rockland County, according to multiple reports.
The 1-year-old Cavapoo named Ginger was killed on Tuesday morning in New City by a German Shepherd K-9 that had been trained by the Rockland County Sheriff’s Office when a New City family’s nanny took her for a walk.
The German Shepherd lives in the neighborhood with Detective Dwayne Defino, according to CBS New York.
Defino was able to pry his partner off Ginger, but it was too late.
The incident remains under investigation, though officials said that the dog is not trained to attack.
Delfino was hospitalized and released after sustaining injuries attempting to break up the attack.
