According to the Department of Social Services, when the county reviewed 1,250 applications — they denied 111 for food stamp benefits, cash assistance, Medicaid payments or day-care subsidies, due to fraud or internal errors. County Executive Ed Day said on Facebook that he applauds the department for their continued hard work at cracking down on those trying to scam the system, said Lohud.com.
So far, 20 of the cases have been turned over to the Rockland County District Attorney for possible criminal charges. County officials, who say they perform standard checks when a person applies, have hired two new investigators to add to their eight-person team in an effort to be more effective at catching errors and fraud, added Lohud.com.
