Yorktown Police say a black bear has been spotted in a residential area.
A resident reported seeing the bear at her home on Brookfield Drive around 1:30 p.m. Monday, according to Police Lt. Kevin Soravilla. Soravilla says police are in the area along with officials from the State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) searching for the animal.
Officials remind residents never to approach a black bear, which can be aggressive, especially if cornered.
Soravilla says if approached by the bear, you should simply back quickly away or make loud noises. In most cases, he says, the bear will retreat. If you spot the bear, contact the Yorktown Police Department at (914) 962-4141.
