Fulton County resident Chance Petteys, age 21, of Johnstown, was arrested Monday, June 17, on suspicion of official misconduct and related charges following an investigation by New York State Police.
According to troopers, Petteys used his position at the Gloversville Police Department to improperly access computer records “without any legitimate law enforcement purposes.” The records included sensitive personal information and accounts of prior police interactions.
He then used the information to contact individuals “in an unprofessional manner,” according to police.
Petteys reportedly tried hiding the acts by deactivating his body-worn camera.
Gloversville Police administration brought the allegations to State Police in early May 2024, just over a year after Petteys joined the agency. He was placed on administrative leave while the city investigated.
Petteys surrendered at the State Police facility in Fonda. He is charged with computer trespass, official misconduct, unauthorized use of a computer, and tampering with public records.
He was issued an appearance ticket to the Gloversville City Court for Monday, June 24. It was not immediately clear whether he is still employed with the city.
The case is being handled by a special prosecutor from the Saratoga County District Attorney’s Office after the Fulton County DA’s Office recused themselves.
