Hudson Valley 12-Year-Old Advances To National Spelling Bee Finals
A young Hudson Valley student could soon be a national champion.
Orange County resident YY Liang, age 12, of New Windsor, is one of eight kids who made it through five rounds of the Scripps National Spelling Bee finals, advancing to the Thursday, May 30 finals, which will be shown live on iON television at 8 p.m.
Four of the Elite 8 are from California and Texas (two from each state), and the others are from California, Colorado, North Carolina, and Florida.
Liange is a nationally-ranked junior tennis player who enjoys video games and has a talent for drawing.

A businesswoman and mother who was a lifelong New York resident has died at the age of 43.
Kimberly A. Hallenbeck was born in Westchester, lived in Orange County, and worked on Long Island.
Her death, on Tuesday, Jan. 9 at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital, came after a two-year battle with cancer, according to her obituary.
A resident of the town of Newburgh, she was the daughter of the late Francis J. Hallenbeck III and Elizabeth (Burns) Laurie, who was born on July 1, 1980 in Bronxville.
She worked as a loan mortgage originator for Contour Mortgage in Garden City.

Woman Airlifted To Westchester Medical Center After Crash Between Car, Tractor-Trailer
A Hudson Valley woman was seriously injured following a crash with a tractor-trailer.
The crash took place in Orange County around 11:15 a.m., Thursday, June 1 in the town of Newburgh.
According to Lt, Peter Talarico, of the town of Newburgh Police, officers on the scene found an accident involving a 2008 Infinity and a 2002 tractor-trailer.

Peacock announced last week the 10-part series starring Natasha Lyonne will air on Peacock on Thursday, Jan. 26.

A Hudson Valley man was one of eight people charged in federal court with conspiracy to distribute more than 1.2 million oxycodone pills.
Orange County resident Anthony Mathis, age 55, of New Windsor, was indicted on Wednesday, Oct. 12, in a 10-count indictment along with a Brooklyn doctor, office manager, and two pharmacists.
According to Breon Peace, US Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, the group allegedly operated a drug distribution ring from a medical office in Brooklyn.

2 Sentenced For Murder Of College Student In Hudson Valley
Two men have been sentenced to prison for the brutal murder of a college student in Hudson Valley.
Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler announced that on Tuesday, Sept. 20, Cornelius Stubbs, age 51, and Carlos Rivera, age 49, both of Newburgh, for the murder of a 21-year-old college student.
At the time of sentencing, more than 40 friends and family members of the victim, Chelsea Debidin of Walden, were present, as well as numerous members of law enforcement representing the town of New Windsor Police and the New York State Police.

Missing Local Woman Found Dead In Car Following Taconic Parkway Crash
A Hudson Valley woman who was reported missing by her family was located off the Taconic State Park in a small body of water, the victim of a car crash.
On Monday, Aug. 1, Orange County resident Katherine M. Garcia was reported missing to the state police by her family, said Trooper AJ Hicks.
Garcia, age 23, of New Windsor, was reportedly last seen by friends on the night of Saturday, July 30, at a residence in Dutchess County the town of Beekman, Hicks said.

Parolee Nabbed For DWI, Possession Of Weapon In Hudson Valley, Police Say
A man on parole for manslaughter is facing new legal trouble after he was allegedly busted driving drunk and carrying a gun, New York State Police said.
Troopers stopped Orange County resident Michael Maisonet, age 44, of New Windsor, at around 10:30 p.m. Thursday, May 5, as he drove on Renwick Street in Newburgh.
During their conversation with him, troopers determined that Maisonet was impaired by alcohol and arrested him, police said.
As he was being apprehended, troopers found a 9mm semi-automatic pistol in his pants, along with a loaded, 17-round magazine, police said.

Man Admits To Murder Of 21-Year-Old Woman In Hudson Valley
A Hudson Valley man has pleaded guilty to murder and other charges in connection with the shooting death of a young woman.
Orange County resident, Carlos Rivera, age 49, of Newburgh, made the plea on Monday, May 2 for the murder which took place in New Windsor in December 2019.
During the incident, Chelsea Debidi, age 21, of Walden, was killed at the Knox Village Apartments in New Windsor at the home of her 20-year-old boyfriend’s family, said the Orange County District Attorney's Office.
The boyfriend was also shot and seriously injured, the DA's office said.

Man Sentenced For Fatally Stabbing Shopper At Supermarket In Hudson Valley
A Hudson Valley man has been sentenced to 20 years to life in prison for stabbing a random man who was shopping to death at a ShopRite supermarket in 2016.
Orange County resident Andrew Goodenough, age 41, of New Windsor, was sentenced on Monday, March 28 after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in February.
At the time that he pleaded guilty, Goodenough admitted that on Saturday, June 11, 2016, he stabbed Michael Kohus, age 35, of Highland Falls in the neck while he was shopping at a supermarket in the Town of New Windsor, the DA's Office said.

$20,000 Reward Offered In Hudson Valley Murder Case
Police in the Hudson Valley are offering a $20,000 reward for an arrest in the 20-year-old murder of an area woman.
On Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, Nancy Smith, a 32-year-old Orange County resident was found dead in her house on Provost Drive in New Windsor.
According to New Windsor Police Deputy Chief Michael Farbent, on that day, Smith’s parents received a call from her office saying that she had not shown up to work at the Horton Hospital in Middletown.
Concerned, they went to check at her New Windsor home where they found her dead on the living room floor, Farbent said…
Doctor Killed In Head-On, Hit-Run Hudson Valley Crash
A doctor from the Hudson Valley was killed in a head-on hit-and-run crash.
The incident took place around 12:20 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 10, in Orange County on Route 32 in the town of Cornwall.
According to Trooper Steven Nevel, Dr. John C. Hordines Jr., age 54, was driving a 2010 Chevy Tahoe southbound when he was hit head-on by a 2013 Honda Accord that crossed over in the southbound lane.
Hordines Jr, of New Windsor, in Orange County, was pronounced dead at the scene.
This is an ongoing investigation.

Park Ranger Driving Drunk On Job Crashes With Daughters In Vehicle, Sheriff Says
A park ranger on duty in the Hudson Valley crashed a county vehicle while his two daughters were passengers, according to authorities.
Orange County resident Christopher Granata, age 41, of New Windsor, was involved in the crash while on duty in Rockland County at the Haverstraw Bay County Park during an Independence Day fireworks celebration, according to Rockland Sheriff Louis Falco.
