Cain broke a record that has stood for more than three decades on Saturday, taking down the national high school and national junior girls record in the 800-meter race on Saturday at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Ore.
The 17-year-old Bronxville High School junior finished with a time of 1:59.51, topping the 2:00.07 mark set by Kelly Gallagher in 1982.
Gallagher would go on to win two Olympic medals, it remains to be seen what the future holds for the immensely talented Cain, who broke her own national high school record in a 1,500-meter race last month.
Cain narrowly missed the podium, finishing fifth overall in an international field that was won by national record holder Francine Niyonsaba of Burundi. According to media reports, a sellout crowd broke into applause when Cain’s record was announced, with one fan shouting, “Come to Oregon!”
