Sgt. Steven Stromberg was on patrol in the southbound lanes of the parkway near Mamaroneck Road when he stopped a 2004 Dodge Intrepid at 6:22 p.m. after observing a traffic violation.
While speaking with the driver, Stromberg observed that an alteration had been made to the center console of the vehicle, which he recognized as an effort to create a “trap” or hidden compartment.
The driver was taken into custody after he was unable to provide a valid driver’s license or any registration and insurance documents for the vehicle. During a subsequent search of the car, Stromberg located a plastic bag containing a block of cocaine that was later determined to weigh 525 grams, or a little more than a half a kilo.
The cocaine has an approximate street value of $20,000.
Nathaniel Jones, 29, of Hamden, Conn., was booked at county police headquarters in Hawthorne and charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 1st Degree and 3rd Degree (Intent to Sell), felonies, and several Vehicle and Traffic Law violations.
He was arraigned in Scarsdale Village Court and was ordered held without bail at the Westchester County Jail in Valhalla.
