TUCKAHOE, N.Y. The Tuckahoe Board of Education announced the appointment of Michael Collins to fill a vacated seat on the board.
At the Monday night meeting, board president Dr. Julio Urbina said that Collins will take over for Bronxville resident James Oliverio, who resigned from his post in September after serving more than eight years on the board.
Urbina said Collins is a senior attorney for a Manhattan law firm that specializes in labor and litigation issues.
"He has attended board meetings on a regular basis and has offered suggestions in the past that were helpful," Urbina said. "I believe that with his background he will be a great addition to the board."
On his first official opportunity to speak as a trustee, Collins told the board members how much he appreciated their confidence in him.
"I will do what I can to serve the kids," Collins said. "The whole reason I am doing this is for the benefit of the kids and the community."
Trustee Michelle Liscio, who was elected to the board last May, was the first to welcome Collins to the board. But Liscio also took the opportunity to thank the many community members who volunteered to fill Oliverio's vacant seat.
"It is inspiring to see how many community members wanted to step up and serve on the board of education," Liscio said. "As a new member myself, I now realize how much time and how big of a commitment this is and I would like to thank our current board members who have been on the board for a long time and our previous board members."
Interim Superintendent Dr. Edward Reilly underscored Liscio's point.
"I, more than most, really understand the depth of time that goes along with being a member of the board of education," Reilly said. "It's a difficult job and there is not always a lot of favorable recognition."
Collins will finish Oliverio's term, which will end in May 2012. He will then have the option of running for his seat.
