TUCKAHOE, N.Y. -- Builders MC Equities will have another year to begin construction of a proposed four-story building on the nearly one acre parcel where the old Salerno's Restaurant once stood.
The Tuckahoe Zoning Board of Appeals held a special meeting Wednesday night and extended the variances and special permits for the construction project, which is located on Main Street.
The new project is slated to have 21 residential units and 3,800 square feet of commercial space. The project will also have a parking area with 42 spots for residents and 19 spaces designated for the retail space.
ZBA Chairman Ronald Gallo said he opted to go ahead with the special meeting to help the builders get the project off the ground.
"Right now it is an empty lot and we would like to give the developers the opportunity to get the project underway," he said.
The ZBA originally granted the project a variance in 2008, when the old restaurant was still standing and vacant. Since then, the developers tore down the building but the project stalled.
Residents made two attempts to halt the project, taking legal action in the courts with Article 78 proceedings against the Zoning and Planning Boards. Both of those cases were dismissed.
Attorney Sy Grunza of Cuddy and Feder, who represents the developers, said the next step is site plan approval from the Tuckahoe Planning Board.
"We are hoping to begin construction next spring," he said.
