TARRYTOWN, N.Y. One man was taken to the Westchester Medical Center after his SUV struck a pole on Route 9 in front of the Mobil Gas Station, causing a pole and transformer to fall down onto another car.
The man in the car that the poll and transformer fell onto was unhurt.
Tarrytown Police Chief Scott Brown said the SUV hit the pole around 12:15 p.m. after the driver had an apparent cardiac event and lost consciousness.
Police are not releasing names at this time.
Brown said the pole and a 13,000 volt transformer hit the car behind the SUV, trapping the man inside the electrified car.
The transformer began leaking a hazardous material once it hit the ground, Brown said.
Police and firefighters responded immediately, Brown said, but had to wait for Con Edison to kill the power before they could check on the drivers. Diners in the El Dorado Diner were kept inside while a Hazmat team worked to contain the spill.
Brown said the diner, the gas station, Mavis Tires and the Jewish Community Center lost power because of the accident.
Tarrytown and Irvington police are directly traffic away from the area as crews work to clean up the accident scene.
Brown said the roadway was fully closed between Route 119 and I-87 from 12:15 until around 3 p.m. The southbound lane was be reopened to both directions of traffic after that. Crews will continue to work in the northbound lane.
Brown expects power to be restored by 11 p.m. tonight.
