Update: The roads were reopened around 2 p.m.
BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. Part of Route 9A and Pleasantville Road were closed due to a gas main break that happened Friday morning while Con Edison workers were replacing an electricity pole, police said.
"Con Ed was fixing the pole and they struck a gas line," said police Officer Michael Zazzini. "Some of the houses had to be evacuated in general area just a precaution, and there was a very strong odor of gas." Con Edison employees are working on fixing the gas line, Zazzini said.
Route 9A was closed between North State Road and Chappaqua Road, and Pleasantville Road was closed from the downtown area where stores and restaurants are located up to Poplar Road, close to St. Theresa's Church. Traffic was diverted east along Chappaqua Road to Route 100, Zazzini said.
St. Theresa's School did not have to be evacuated because the gas leak did not reach that far, Zazzini said. "It should be cleared up hopefully soon," the officer said.
