A police department in Westchester is urging parents to teach their children proper bicycle riding habits following numerous incidents of unsafe and dangerous riding. In an announcement on Friday, Sept. 6, the Town of Harrison Police Department noted an increase in "reckless and improper" bicycle riding throughout the town, including the downtown and West Harrison business districts. Multiple lanes of a busy parkway in Northern Westchester had to be temporarily closed after a truck crashed into an overpass, police said. The incident happened on Saturday, Jan. 27 just before 1 p.m., when a box truck crashed into the Bedford Road overpass on the northbound Saw Mill River Parkway near Exit 28 in Pleasantville, according to Westchester County Police Public Information Officer Kieran O'Leary. In an effort to catch drivers who illegally pass stopped school buses, Putnam County has entered into an agreement with a company to add cameras on stop sign arms to catch violators. The county's new partnership with BusPatrol America to add cameras on school bus stop-arms was announced by County Executive Kevin Byrne on Thursday, July 20. A 23-year-old took officers on a high-speed chase in Northern Westchester as he attempted to avoid a traffic stop, police said. Shortly before 9 a.m. on Tuesday, March 15 in Yorktown, an officer on patrol spotted a driver speeding on Underhill Avenue and failing to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of Route 129, turning without signaling. A man was arrested for alleged impaired driving after being busted driving through a red light with no headlights on, police said. Crompond resident Edinson-Mauro Merino-Meza, 41, was stopped by an officer shortly before 11 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 15, when he drove past a Yorktown police officer on Route 6 with no headlights on, through a red traffic light, prompting a traffic stop. Man Caught With Illegal, Loaded Handgun In I-84 Stop
A traffic stop on I-84 in Dutchess County led to weapons charges for a man in possession of an illegal handgun. State Police troopers from the Wappinger barrack stopped Bronx resident Brandon Burgess at approximately 11 a.m. on Thursday morning in Fishkill after he committed a violation of vehicle and traffic law.
