KINGSTON, N.Y. Once the Fox Lane girls lacrosse team runs its settled offense, Sydney Stern takes position behind the net and goes to work.
Stern will receive a pass from one of her teammates and then go about patiently waiting for the exact moment to connect with a teammate, on a point pass, cutting toward the net resulting in a goal.
The senior rang up seven assists and also scored twice, leading Fox Lane to a 19-3 victory over Section 9 titlist Saugerties in a New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class B regional semifinal at Dietz Stadium.
The Foxes (17-3-1) will play Section 2 champion, Queensbury on Saturday at SUNY Albany. The winner advances to the state final four in Cortland, June 8-9.
Kailey OHagan led the Foxes with seven goals and Sammy Jo Tracy added five. Kate Burbank contributed a hat trick and two assists. Fox Lanes defense shut out Saugerties in the second half.
I love it, said Stern, who has a Section 1-leading 90 assists. Since my sophomore year I have always been behind the goal.
During a six-goal barrage in the first half, in a span of five minutes, Stern had a hand in five. She assisted on goals by Tracy and OHagan, scored two and then found a cutting Tracy for another score.
On her first goal of the game, Stern had the ball and was running the offense. However, a Saugerties defender came charging toward her so Stern dodged her, circled around the net and angling left, beat goalie Emma Gremer.
I heard their coach tell the girl, Go get her, Stern said. If she is going to come charging out at me, I am going to go around her and go to goal.
Even though Fox Lane was the final game of a tripleheader, starting at 7:30 p.m., the Foxes were focused from the opening draw. A dinner trip to Olive Garden, prior to arriving at Dietz Stadium helped.
On the bus ride here, Sammy and I were talking about everyone staying focused, said Stern, who will attend Dickinson College in the fall and play lacrosse. We talked about it again when we were warming up. We also talked about working as a team and doing it together.
