Kennedy Lady Gaels Host Holiday Tournament

SOMERS, N.Y. – The Kennedy High School girls’ basketball team hosted its annual Kennedy Catholic Holiday Tournament, including teams from Brewster, White Plains and Byram Hills, beginning Wednesday.

The Lady Gaels (3-2) fell to Byram Hills 31-24 in the opening round and White Plains topped Brewster 44-34 in the other semifinal opener. Kennedy will play Brewster in Thursday’s consolation game at 5 p.m. and White Plains will meet Byram Hills in the championship final at 7 p.m.

Before Wednesday’s loss, the Gaels had won three straight games after opening the season with a loss to Somers. The Gaels won the Briarcliff Holiday Tournament by doubling up Pelham, 61-30, then beating a tough Poughkeepsie team 68-42 in the final. Senior guard Tara Cremin of Yorktown was named Tournament MVP and juniors Sara Dowd and Shayna Gaskins, of the Bronx and Yorktown, respectively, made the All-Tournament Team.  The girls then traveled to Lourdes, where they posted a hard-fought 43-40 victory.

“Our DNA is DNR,” coach Al Morales said before clarifying.  “Defense Never Rests.”

Morales will be relying on the leadership of veterans Cremin and Gaskins, as well as sophomore returnees Leah Greene of Cortlandt Manor and Kiera Hennessy of Mahopac. Dowd is a transfer from Our Lady of Victory Academy in Dobbs Ferry.

“We will be quick,” Morales said, “but still young.”
