MAHOPAC, N.Y. - John Jay comes into the Section 1 Class A Football Championship game playing its best football. The Indians, who are riding an eight-game winning streak, will play undefeated Poughkeepsie, Sunday, 4:30 p.m., at Mahopac High School, off an outstanding defensive effort. John Jay blanked Rye, 21-0, and held the Garnets vaunted rushing game to less than 100 yards. The Indians also registered six sacks of quarterback Andrew Livingston.
The defense, led by linemen Ryan Sanders and Tyler Robertson, were physical from the opening whistle. John Jays defense will face the ultimate test against Poughkeepsie and its multi-dimensional quarterback, Jason Oliver. He is the focal point of the Pioneers offense.
Oliver leads the team in rushing with 1,108 yards and 15 touchdowns. He has also thrown for 1,046 yards and 13 touchdowns. Halfback Kenneth Charter is second on Poughkeepsie with 420 yards rushing and seven touchdowns.
While John Jays defense will be tracking Oliver all over the field, Poughkeepsies defense will have its collective hands full with John Jays offense.
John Jay opponents have learned that the Indians offense is equally dangerous with either Tyler Keech or Jack Lambert at quarterback. The junior tandem will burn teams with the run or pass. Last week against Rye, Lamberts 42-yard touchdown burst gave John Jay a 14-0 lead.
The unit that has been overlooked is John Jays offensive line. The quintet has been playing excellent football, creating holes for the quarterbacks and halfback Danny Caiola to run through. The offensive line has controlled the line of scrimmage during this eight-game winning streak.
