Kat-Lewisboro's Roelle Replaces Irvington Superintendent

IRVINGTON, N.Y. -- Robert Roelle has been chosen to take over as interim superintendent in the Irvington Union Free School District, replacing Kathleen Matusiak.

Matusiak is retiring after seven years with the district at the end of August. Roelle’s appointment is effective beginning Tuesday. Roelle will serve as interim superintendent for the 2011-12 school year, after which a permanent superintendent will be named.

School Board President John Dawson said he was “very pleased” to have Roelle as interim superintendent. Dawson said during his interview, Roelle “came across as somebody who would work very hard on everything we needed this year.”

Roelle will receive a salary of approximately $222,000, according to Dawson.

Roelle comes to Irvington from the Katonah-Lewisboro School District in South Salem, where he had been the superintendent for four years. Before that post, he worked as superintendent for 15 years for the schools in Ossining.

Roelle has also served at the Bay Shore School District in Long Island as assistant superintendent. His first 12 years in education were spent in Illinois, where he grew up. Roelle was a social studies teacher and a program supervisor during his time in Illinois.

Roelle has a doctorate of education in leadership and policy studies from Loyola University. He received an M.A. and Bachelor’s degree from Roosevelt University in Chicago.

In a press release from the Irvington Board of Education, the board stated it “very excited” to have Roelle as interim superintendent.

“Roelle will bring his wealth of experience in public education to the community to continue the mission and goals of the Irvington Union Free School District,” read the press release.
