KATONAH, N.Y. Tuesday will mark a milestone in Harvey School history, when more than 300 students and staff from the co-ed private school in Katonah will participate in its first school-wide, all-day community service initiative.
Working in the Nodine Hill section of southwest Yonkers, the entire upper school student body of 250 will join faculty members to spruce up the neighborhood as part of Habitat for Humanity.
This is the first of what we hope will be an annual school-wide event, said Phil Lazzaro, Harveys new upper school head.
Lazzaro, who spearheaded the initiative to involve every student in ninth through 12th grades, said the day-long project will help build community and help our students develop the ethic of giving back to their community.
The group will be painting inside the rectory of Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church on Walnut Street and cleaning out the basement, where the community plans to open a new teen center.
Other projects at the site involve renovating the parking lot and painting the wrought iron fence around the church, which was built in 1853.
Students and staff also will paint fences and storefronts, stain planters, remove graffiti, refurbish a playground and clear two empty lots.
In addition, 60 Harvey students will help out at Yonkers PS 23, doing a variety of projects to assist teachers and work with children in classrooms.
