BEDFORD, N.Y. Bedford police were called to the scene of an accident at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, when a car drove off the road onto the front lawn of an Old Post Road residence and crashed into two trees.
Police said that while driving north on Route 172 in his 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee, Tyler Brammer, 25, of Thomaston, Conn., failed to negotiate a right turn onto Route 22.
Police said the Bedford Village Fire Department had to cut open the roof of the car to reach Brammer, who was unconscious when they extricated him. Brammer did appear to regain consciousness once or twice in the period that followed, police said.
The fire department's ambulance transported Brammer to Westchester Medical Center to be treated for back, neck and head injuries, police said.
Bedford Police charged Brammer with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor, along with failure to keep right and failure to wear a seat belt, which are violations.
Police said Brammer refused to take a blood test at the hospital but made admissions that he drank two vodka and Red Bulls earlier in the night. Officers smelled a strong scent of alcohol on his breath, according to police.
Brammer was initially in the intensive care unit but was moved to regular care later in the morning, police said, and is being held at the medical center for continued treatment. Brammer is due in Bedford Town Court on July 5.
