More than 100 people gathered at Katonah Memorial Park Wednesday to catch the show-stealing antics of Robbie the Cockroach and his friends during the Wildlife Conservation Societys butterfly show.
The show, which was presented by the Wildlife Conservation Society of the Bronx Zoo, is designed to walk children through the connection that plants and insects share in the ecosystem. Ethan Angelica, Eric Bailey and Ashleigh Awusie used a variety of hand puppets and costume to give an interactive account of the monarch butterflys growth and migration to Mexico.
But Robbie, a Madegascar hissing cockroach puppet played by Bailey, may have stole the show with his barbs and one-liners.
The kids love him, Bailey said. I remember one show when a girl was crying when she first saw him. She was up on stage dancing with him by the time the show ended.
The show is part of the Town of Bedford Recreation and Parks Departments summer concert series. The series, which is free and open to the public, offers entertainment at various town parks every Wednesday at 7 p.m. until Aug. 3.
Bailey said his troupe performs everyday at the Bronz Zoo and also at various schools, parks and libraries as requested.
Katonah resident Jan-Erik Guerth, attended the show with his wife, Bernadette Tillmon, and their five-year-old son, Gabriel.
Weve seen them perform at the Bronx Zoo before and we like it, Guerth said. We had a wonderful time and we want to thank the Bronx Zoo for bring them here.
Amy Kaprelian, a Mount Kisco resident, attended the event with her 3-year-old daughter, Caroline.
I just wanted to take advantage of summer, Kaprelian said. I just want to be outside as much as possible and its a nice way to keep the kids busy.
