Katonah Museum Gearing Up For Tri-State Exhibit

KATONAH, N.Y—The Katonah Museum of Art is opening its doors to the public in more than one way this weekend, as the museum will be hosting the annual "Art to the Point: A Tri-State Juried exhibit." The showcase displays talent in the tri-state area by inviting those within the boundaries to send in their art to the museum and have it be judged by a renowned artist.

Donald Sultan, the famed New York City artist, will be judging the exhibit, and will choose roughly 120 pieces to be displayed in the museum. Three will be chosen as the top submissions, with first prize winning $1,000. Sulton, who will be judging the submissions on Monday, has had pieces displayed in the Dallas Museum of Art, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, and the Tate Gallery in  London.

“This exhibition will focus on painting, sculpture, and drawing. Materials are blank pages used to transfer the spirit to the object through the artists’ mastery of their vision and craft,” Sulton said. “There is no political agenda; there is no theme other than clarity of purpose. The artists who submit must know what they have to do. They have to make art. They have to say what they mean, and say it clearly.”

The artists are able to submit up to two paintings, drawings, prints, mixed media, sculpture, photography, or video (four-minute segments). All of the artwork needed to be done in the last four years.

Nancy Wallach, the head curatorial affairs at the museum, is greatly anticipating the arrivals, which will be closing off submission entry at 3 p.m. on Saturday. Until then, locals who wish to have their work judged by Sultan can submit their work.

“It’s very important to support area artists. It’s always been part of our mission. Some of them do wonderful work,” Wallach said.

Submissions go to the museum, and need to be paired with the entry forms found on the museum’s website. As of Friday, Wallach noted that the museum expects to get nearly 1,000 entries. The exhibit will be opened with a reception on January 14, and will run until February 19.
