KATONAH, N.Y. Westchester County Legislator Peter Harckham (D/Katonah) will serve a second term as the Board of Legislators' Democratic majority leader.
Harckham, whose District 2 includes Somers, North Salem, Mount Kisco, Bedford, Lewisboro and Pound Ridge, was reelected to a third two-year term on the board last November.
Board Chairman Ken Jenkins (D/Yonkers), who announced committee chairmanships for the new legislative term Friday, credited Harckham with helping craft a bipartisan budget for 2012 that cut spending and didn't increase taxes.
Jenkins noted Harckham was chosen as majority leader in 2010 "because of his work ethic, organizational skills and for being a bipartisan consensus builder willing to reach out and work across party lines."
Meanwhile, Harckham will also serve again as chairman of the Rules Committee, which oversees the board's structure, organization and appointments.
In that capacity, Jenkins said Harckham brings to the board "extensive experience in the legislative process and the enforcement of local laws, as well as a deep concern for the quality of life in our community."
Another legislator that represents Somers, Michael Kaplowitz (D/Somers), will return as chairman of the Committee on the Environment & Energy.
Jenkins noted Kaplowitz has been committed to preserving the county's open space and conservation issues and fought to convert the Indian Point nuclear power plants to a non-nuclear facility.
