BEDFORD, N.Y. Domestic deity and media mogul Martha Stewart got what she wanted from the town of Bedford on Wednesday night.
The Planning Board unanimously approved construction of a new two-story storage facility on Stewarts residence at 48 Girdle Ridge Road in Katonah.
Stewarts architect, Patrick Croke, requested the special use permit at an April 10 public hearing because the proposed storage shed would exceed the towns maximum standard dimensions of 2,500 square feet and height of 20 feet.
At that meeting, the board suggested several revisions and suggested the Wetlands Control Commission do a site walk before approval was considered. After a trip to the 137-acre property, the commission determined that access to the building would not hurt the surrounding wetlands.
Next, the revisions suggested by the board were put in place. Based on the discussion at the last meeting and our conversations at the field visit, weve made the changes that were discussed and suggested, Croke said Wednesday.
These revisions included setting the shed back 710 feet from Girdle Ridge Road, twice as far back as originally proposed. The building, which will measure 40 by 80 feet and stand more than two stories tall, would also be rotated 90 degrees from its original spot and access pushed farther to the east.
In addition, a small down lighting would be placed over the storage sheds doors. Croke said he and the neighbors property manager also discussed planting 6- or 7-foot tall evergreens by the propertys stone wall.
Planning Board Chairman Donald Coe added some conditions to the boards approval: no vehicle repair will be allowed on the premises and no hot water or bathroom will be permitted.
Stewarts shed will join the 14 other buildings on the property, including the main house, a barn, guest houses and a stable.
