Bedford Hills Fire Department Visits Local Library

Bedford Hills, NY-- The Bedford Hills Fire Department made its annual trip to the Bedford Hills Free Library on Wednesday, displaying not only their fire truck and equipment, but also their useful safety tips.

The annual trip is in honor of Fire Prevention Week, which lands in the week of October 9th in memory of the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire. Eager kids and parents sat attentively in the library, soaking in the information dispelled by the men in uniform. But for some, just the truck itself would do the trick.

“My son loves any kind of trucks, but he loves fire trucks especially,” says local resident Michelle Kaplan. “He loves it when they’re outside the firehouse, of course.”

While the truck was a shiny bribe for very young ones to join, fire safety was an issue touched upon heavily, ranging from what to do when your clothes catch fire to where to go when a fire occurs

"If the kids do go through an experience with the fire, they’re able to react properly by having instilled in their mind what’s involved and what they can expect,” says firefighter John Beach, who has been with the department for 45 years. “We'd rather them have at least a little understanding before an event.”

Beach also knows their talk can hold useful tidbits for the parents as much as the kids, as many parents in attendance realized they might be shorthanded when it comes to fire safety rules.

“Some of the parents have an evacuation plan and are prepared, but there are others that wait to be told what to do,” Beach says. “But kids look to their parents for direction and advice, and we try to help them with that.”

Parents in Bedford Hills who want to learn more about fire safety can go to the Bedford Hills Fire Department Open House on Sunday between 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. In it, there will be fire truck rides and safety demonstrations.
