MOUNT KISCOShopping for presents and treats during the holidays is usually filled with feel-good moments; genuine feelings of satisfaction towards giving to those one knows and appreciates. For people who bought items at Connies Bakery and General Store in Mount Kisco, they received an added sense of fulfillment.
Connies, which has been in operation for more than six years, donates all of its net profits to charities. After taxes and expenses to keep the shop afloat, the proceeds go to charities of the stores choice.
Started by attorney, entrepreneur and philanthropist Connie Milstein, the bakery and store acts as the ultimate sweets supplier, helping giving gifts to local families through handmade items, and monetary donations through its philanthropy.
Youre giving a gift, which means youre thinking of somebody, and that gift gives back because the profits from that gift go to charity, said Deena Plotka, the Chief Cupcake of Connies. Its a gift that gives back.
Loraine Judelman is a staffer at the store, and acknowledges that the shoppers first are in disbelief about the program. It takes a while because people are so skeptical, its hard to believe that 100 percent of the profits, she said. But once they understand the mission, they embrace it.
With department stores towering over the little guys throughout the country, staff member Liane Paap knows that the small store charm is also a draw. When you buy here, youre not giving to a big corporation. Youre giving and helping others at the same time, she said. Connies doesnt keep a penny, which makes it extra special.
Though Paap also knows that one of the main reasons a store like this can exist is because of the surroundings it is in. Im so thankful for the health personally, and that this is such a lucky community, she said. Were so blessed where we live and I wish others were as fortunate as us.
