The events are from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22 and 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 24 at the trust's Sugar Hill Farm, 403 Harris Road, Bedford Hills.
Under the trust's guidance, landowners interested in leasing their land for agriculture use can learn how to establish successful, long-term relationships with farmer tenants, as well as meet prospective farmers looking for land to lease.
In the last year, the Hudson Valley Farmlink Network, coordinated by American Farmland Trust, has found it’s not only local farmers who are reaching out for guidance and advice, but also farmers of all backgrounds and experience levels, from beginning farmers who call the Hudson Valley home to more experienced growers wishing to relocate.
“The Hudson Valley is rich in resources and people who are really making an effort to keep farmland productive and protected,” says Sandy Lejeune, an organic farmer in California who is actively searching for a farm in the Hudson Valley.
Lejeune sought out help from the network, a partnership of 15 organizations including the Westchester Land Trust. The network, which is celebrating its first anniversary this fall, connects farmers and non-farming owners of agricultural land and helps farm families transfer their farms to the next generation.
It also hosts the new Hudson Valley Farmland Finder website, which offers listings of farmers looking for land and farmland owners seeking to lease or sell their land for agriculture.
In its first year, the network has helped 32 farmers find land and educated 350 farmers and farmland owners about the process of farmland leasing.
