That storm wound up being all that -- and more.
The numbers are coming in and they're proving that this past weekend's nor-easter wasn't just massive, it was historic.
In Glengary, W.Va., a small town of less than 300 people, the storm dropped 42 inches of snow, according to preliminary measurements released Sunday, Jan. 24, by the National Weather Service.
Early reports suggest that communities in Virginia, central and western Maryland, northeastern West Virginia and southeastern Pennsylvania, all received more than 36 inches of snow, while scores of others received more than 24 inches, according to the weather service.
Locally, the highest totals were found in New York City, where, in the Jackson Heights section of Queens, a trained weather observer measured 34 inches of freshly fallen snow. Twenty-nine inches fell in Brooklyn while about 27 inches fell in Manhattan, according to the weather service.
Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties all saw significant snow fall as well, with Port Chester among the tops in Westchester with 24.5 inches, Stony Point among the highest in Rockland with more than 17 inches and Lake Carmel among the highest in Putnam with 12 inches, according to the weather service.
While Monday's forecast appears relatively clear and a bit warmer, conditions on Tuesday and Wednesday could begin to deteriorate quickly, forecasters said.
