WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. When the snow finally struck Westchester on Saturday for the first time since October, many residents were glad to see it arrive. People bundled up in warm clothes and enjoyed the wintry day. It might not have been fun in the sun, but winter brought out enthusiasm among the young and their parents.
Hes been dying to go out, said Ron Nunez of his eight-year-old son, Ron Jr. Hes been sick for three days. Hartsdale father and son were headed to Panera Bread in White Plains along with Rons wife, Maricor.
After eating, the family was going to the movie theater for a movie that Ron Jr. has been dying to see.
Hes been looking forward to watch Red Tails, said Ron Sr. He loves airplanes.
Some kids, like Varun and Aditi Valada, raced to the stores with their parents to buy snow sleds.
Their father was not sure if they would be able to go because the snow had started melting already as they were leaving Walmart. However, both of his kids were not easily giving up on the idea of sleigh riding.
We might, they both said. Probably [go sleighriding].
Bill Weinblatt, the owner of Wise Hardware in Pelham, was thrilled to see the snow falling on Saturday morning.
We did pretty good today, said Weinblatt of sales. Im happy, we got the white stuff, and life is good. It was a good day.
People rushed to his store to pick up shovels and other products to clear away the snow.
Mostly today, they were waiting to see if the weatherman was gonna be honest, said Weinblatt. We probably sold about 50 shovels, a bunch of salt and calcium chloride. It was great.
Maria Ojeda was enjoying the snow with her three kids. Chloe, her four-year-old daughter, could not wait to play in the snow.
Shes been dying to go out, said Ojeda. Im letting her play here because they havent shoveled here for a little bit and were just gonna go to the mall now.
It did not take long for her 11-year-old son, Carlos, to enjoy the first snowy day in three months with some friends.
Carlos went out at 10:30 in the morning with about four or five kids to play while it was still snowing outside, said Ojeda. Even though I wanted him to wait until it tapered off, he couldnt wait. So, I just let him go. I had three kids knocking on my door asking if he could go out, so I said fine, go ahead. So, hes been playing. He came back around two.
The mother of three was glad there was not too much snow.
It doesnt seem like it was that bad and Im actually glad. Its hard to commute when you go to work and so on, said Ojeda. The Pelham family planned on going to the mall for the rest of the day, which 14-year-old Samantha was glad about.
Dave Katz, owner of the Depot Market, could not wait to put his snow blower to use.
Its about time, said Katz. I mean it is the end of January, a little snow would be nice. In fact, Ill get to use my snow blower finally. I got it all primed up and ready to go and now its sitting in my garage. Im happy I can finally crank that thing up when I go home.
The father of two was hoping to play with his kids in the snow before taking his wife out to a dinner and movie that night.
