The storm's strength will be determined by the magnitude of wintry precipitation, wind and thunderstorms, as well as the extent of rain and warmth, AccuWeather said.
"If cold air holds its ground for a time, a significant amount of snow and ice can occur over interior locations of the Northeast," said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist John Gresiak. "If cold air gives up easily, drenching rain will sweep rapidly northward, and there could be problems such as urban and poor drainage area flooding."
After a sunny Saturday with a high temperature around the freezing mark, the next chance of snow for the area will be on Super Bowl Sunday, with some snow or snow showers possible from late morning to early afternoon. Little or no accumulation is expected.
The sun returns Monday during the day with a high temperature in the mid-30s.
Snow is expected to move in overnight Monday into Tuesday, with the snow mixing in with freezing rain during the morning commute in southern areas south of I-287.
Points farther north, including Northern Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess, could see snow continue through the morning into Tuesday afternoon.
It is too early to predict possible snowfall accumulation amounts.
