Founder Of Caldor, With First Store In Westchester, Dies Fairfield County entrepreneur, philanthropist, and founder of the Caldor department store chain, Carl Bennett, has died at the age of 101. Bennett died at his home in Greenwich on Thursday, Dec. 23. The Caldor empire came to be while working with his late wife, Dorothy Bennett, who together turned an $8,000 military salary savings into a chain of discount department stores that spanned from the 1950s to the mid-1980s when he sold his 120 store business to Associated Dry Goods. Truck Slams Into Train Overpass In Greenwich For the second time this summer, a tractor-trailer has hit the top of a railroad overpass in Fairfield County. The latest incident took place around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday in Greenwich at the Steamboat Road railroad overpass, said Greenwich Police. The truck's roof was torn off but managed to make it out from under the bridge.  The same overpass was hit on June 29 when another truck almost tore its roof off passing under the bridge. Greenwich police said the bridge has been struck repeatedly over the years due to the driver's not reading the height signs. Local officials have been working to …

Expect Delays: Greenwich Town Party To Impact I-95 Traffic, Local Roads Greenwich police are alerting residents and partygoers to expect traffic delays and road closures during the annual Greenwich Town Party on Saturday. The event, which draws more than 8,000 visitors, takes place at Roger Sherman Baldwin Park, 100 Arch St., and features a day full of fun events for kids, family-friendly music and lots of great food.  It's meant to bring together the town's residents to help usher in summer and to get to know each other.  A huge draw this year is a concert performance by Eric Clapton.
